How to Upload Files to the Internet

Most people have no problem downloading from the Internet. You usually click a link, then tell the browser where to store it. But how do you get a file from your computer up to the internet?

To get a file up to the internet, use FTP. That stands for File Transfer Protocol.

What is FTP?

FTP is actually a very simple process. The assembler language code for simple FTP is only a few lines long.

FTP software is more elaborate of course. It has error correction, login and security features, etc.

FTP Software

If you just want to upload a few files, you can use Windows Explorer to upload. It has some peculiarities. And it may take some getting used to. But once you get the feel of it, it is not too bad.

You can also use FTP software. You can find free FTP software. Filezilla is free, and does not come with adware or other such nonsense. And it works quite well.

There is CuteFTP which a lot of people like. It is very user friendly.

Then you have the professional FTP such as WS-FTP Pro. If you are going to upload a bunch of files, or very large files, you will want to spend a little money of a professional FTP software. At the time of this writing (December, 2008) Professional FTP software runs less than $100 USD.

Where to upload files to?

If you have a website, you can upload your files there.

If you want to share photos with people, you may not even need FTP software. You can find websites like Photobucket that have FTP capability built in to their site. You get what you pay for, though. Photobucket has its limits.

You can also buy “hosting”. You may also want to buy a domain name. If you just want to upload photos or other stuff to share with your friends, you can find a cheap hosting plan. You’ll almost certainly want to buy a domain name. Domain names run about $20 per year or less.

How to upload the files.

Once you have a place to upload to, regardless of which method of uploading you choose, you will need certain information. Below is a list of information you will need for almost any FTP connection. Your host may have a few more things you’ll need to enter.

  • The FTP host: This can be an IP address (An IP address looks like 123.45.678.90) or a domain name. Sometimes preceded with “ftp.” A common FTP host may look like: ftp.somewebsite.com
  • Starting or Home Folder: Your host will have to let you know this. Some common starting folders for websites are /public_html, /wwwroot, /httpdocs… There are several more. Note: You will probably not enter any leading or trailing forward slashes (/) in your FTP configuration.
  • Passive or Active FTP? Try Passive FTP first if you are not sure. It is the most common kind.
  • Username and password: Self-explanatory. Don’t be surprised if your username looks like an email address.
  • The FTP Port: You may not ever have to enter the port. Port 21 is used almost universally.

Making Your Home Wheelchair Friendly

Adapting our homes to be more wheelchair friendly does not have to cost the earth, but there are some essential adaptations that have to be made in order to make the daily life of a wheelchair user as independent as possible. Whether it is for a wheelchair bound child that will grow up in your house, or for an adult that has only recently needed the use of a wheelchair, they will want to be able to do things they have always done, be it take a shower, help to set the table, or just move about their home easily and at their leisure. Follow the simple steps detailed below to ensure that the main living areas of your home are wheelchair friendly, none of them cost very much and are easy to install.

General

Make the road surfaces leading up to the house weather proof in all seasons by laying concrete down. For easy manoeuvrability around the home, loose carpet and rugs should be removed. You do not have to replace your furniture but try to change your room around so that there are wide enough spaces for a wheelchair to move around. Perhaps the most important change you can make to your house when making it more wheelchair friendly is a bump rail. Not only will a bump rail protect the wheels on the chair, but they will also prevent any damage caused by scrapes and impacts on the wall, which is costly to keep maintained. It is difficult to repair damage to walls and paint over any fixed areas whilst ensuring easy movement around the home.

The Doorways

The entrance to your house should be accessible by ramp at a shallow gradient, to prevent any extra strain when entering or exiting your home. It is important that the doorways are wide enough to easily fit a wheelchair through without the user banging their elbows. If you have narrow doorways, consider removing the door frame and leaving the space open plan so that the hassle of opening and closing the door is also reduced. If your doorways are already wide enough, swap the handles for lever style handles instead of door knobs as they are easier for a wheelchair user to master. To prevent any damage to the door or frame coming from constant banging by the wheels, install door edge protectors and this will preserve the aesthetics of the doorway.

The Kitchen

Kitchens are probably the trickiest area of a house to make wheelchair friendly without a total redesign. However there are small things you can do to make everyday living more relaxing. Move favourite foods and snacks to cupboards on a lower level, and try to use roll away carts as kitchen surfaces as they are easier for a wheelchair to fit under. If you can, exchange appliances that have top level controls for those with the buttons on the front. This will make them easier and safer to use, especially the oven and hob.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is where you are likely to spend the most money but it is essential to preserve the dignity and independence of any wheelchair user. Change your existing toilet bowl for one specifically designed for use by a commode wheelchair, and install a water powered seat that is height adjustable to make getting in and out of the bath or shower easier. Minor adaptations include installing grab bars on the walls and the side of the bath or shower, and covering the floor in a slip resistant surface for safety reasons.

None of these adaptations mean spending thousands of pounds or totally redesigning your home. They are simple steps that you can make to ensure that any wheelchair user living or visiting your home feels completely at ease and independent.

Team National Leads – Stop Chasing Cold Team National Leads

The History of Team National

Team National is a growing company that’s been in operation since 1997. Founder Dick Loehr, a direct salesman for many years, finally created his own company to help other entrepreneurs succeed.

The basic premise of Team National is that they provide discounts on a variety of products, ranging from 20 different industries, to customers. Customers can puchase these discounts (in the forms of coupons and deals) for anywhere between $400 and $2,000 dollars. The idea is that the savings will be much more than this amount, when customers cash in on all of the deals.

Reps make money when they convert customers into their downlines. The goal is to sell as many discount packages as you can, and also encourage others to start their own home based business by doing the same. Commissions are earned on your downline, and your personal sales as well.

The big question for many who are considering joining Team National, or who have already joined, is this: How can reps get enough leads to bring them true success?

Selling to friends and family is a fairly pointless pursuit. What real success looks like is thousands of people in your downline, and adding new reps each day. So where can one start?

What are Leads? How Do You Use Them?

Leads are king. You can either pay for them, or generate them yourself. Many people choose to pay for them, and they end up chasing a lot of cold leads. The issue with paid leads is that you generally don’t know their quality until you’ve already paid for them. The process can be a big waste of time and money.

Sometimes with Team National, reps have been known to purchase leads (from a cheap price of $.050 to a more expensive, $5.00 lead) from a company and end up with huge headaches. It turns out, some people have been promised a “gift” by signing up on a website. They sign up, hoping to get something free from Team National. Instead, they get phone calls from reps asking if they’d like to own their own business.

You can see the issues with these leads. And it’s not Team National’s fault; it’s the iffy companies that generate insufficient leads, and try to pass them off as quality to representatives.

It’s not a fair game. Any seasoned Team National rep knows this. Sometimes, it can pay off to try and generate your own Team National leads.

Generating Team National Leads

Generating your own leads is free and can lead to much warmer, more trusting prospects. While it takes a bit of time to initially set up your lead generating system, the rewards can be worth the time investment.

The basic methods for lead generation include building a website or blog, and driving traffic to that blog through SEO, social media, PPC, article marketing, blog comments, and forums. Once prospects are driven to your site, you can gather their information through an automated system, and follow up with the leads at your convenience.

Benefits include less time spent on the phone explaining your venture (because your leads will already be familiar with your opportunity, and you), less time spent chasing dead leads, and more money in your pocket since you truly haven’t paid anything for the leads. Quality is incredibly important for time-pressed representatives.

It’s not difficult to set up these systems, it just requires a bit of knowledge about the internet and some diligence in learning the best way to set up your lead generation system. But there is no reward without hard work, and luckily, working on lead generation can pay off in spades.

Social Media And The Impact It Has On Globalization

Today’s society is run by social media, whether it be, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, or just simply different sites on the internet. Almost everyone has access to these outlets whenever they want. This constant connection to different social media outlets provide unique opportunities and threats to Companies, especially those on a global scale. If a company uses these outlets and is able to positively affect their public relations then this can be a huge advantage, but if a company is caught doing something illegal or unethical, there is nothing they can do to stop the information from being plaster over the different outlets.

An example of how a company was affected both positively and negatively by the social media uprising is Nike. Nike came under fire in the 1990’s for accusations of unfair treatment of workers overseas, saying they pay their employees 14 cents an hour under the labor laws in Indonesia. Until the 2000’s though the American public had not been exposed to the reality of the situation. Jim Keady filmed a documentary on Nike, “Nike: Behind the Swoosh”, documenting the poor working conditions and living on their wages of 1.25 a day. “I lived in conditions they lived in and on the wages they paid – $1.25 a day. I lost 25 lbs in a month in a rat-infested slum in Tangerang, Indonesia, home to tens of thousands of the women and men who produce the Nike sneakers adored by so many athletes and consumers” (Keady). This documentary is easily accessible on YouTube and many other outlets. This 20 minute documentary went viral all over the United States, I even watched it in one of my college classes, and had a huge impact on Nike’s image. Nike CEO Phil Knight said this, “The Nike product has become synonymous with slave wages, forced overtime, and arbitrary abuse” (Lutz). This was a very bad time for Nike, but by taking the problem head on and using social media outlets to show they fixed the problem, Nike was able to restore its’ image. “… Nike has become more transparent than its competitors about its labor practices, publishing a 108-page report revealing conditions and pay in its factories and acknowledging widespread issues, as well as a complete list of factories it contracted with. To this day, Nike continues to publish public reports of conditions in its factories” (Lutz). Nike was affected very negatively by the use of the internet and social media, but has now been able to use those outlets in order to save their image and improve it.

Social Media is not just a great way to improve a company’s image, but also to advertise. With the younger generation, “Millennials”, being on their devices all day and constantly connected to social media outlets, it is a great place for advertisements. The free version of the music app Pandora for example, when you are using the app it allows you to listen to a variety of songs, but every so often your music is interrupted by an AD. There is nothing you can do to skip these advertisements and thus are forced to listen to the 15 to 30 second commercial. Facebook has a list of Ads on the right side of your screen for a variety of different items, YouTube makes you watch Ads before continuing to your video, and Instagram and Twitter have paid for sponsored ads on your timeline. By companies advertising this way they are exposing themselves to a variety of different people and markets. Pandora, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and more are global social media sites, they reach people all over the world and the smart companies are using them to advertise themselves and their products. Social media has given companies a whole new platform from which they can reach consumers by pairing themselves with social media outlets in order to reach target consumers. The Social media movement has changed the way companies interact with consumers and will continue to change the way they interact as technology changes. It can be a great resource for a company as long as they know how to use it and are aware the effects their actions can have on their image.
