Outdoor Ceiling Fans

If you are planning on installing a ceiling fan in an outdoor location, it is important to purchase a fan that is designed specifically for that purpose. If you install an indoor fan in an outdoor area it is likely to short out (which can be hazardous) or simply break down prematurely. Outdoor ceiling fans are designed differently than indoor ceiling fans because they need to be able to the forces of mother nature.

Here are some of the ways that outdoor ceiling fans differ from those made for indoors:

  1. The decorative motor casing is either sealed or designed to prevent water or moisture from coming in contact with the actual motor inside.
  2. The wiring is a higher grade with additional shielding.
  3. Screws and other components are typically made of stainless steel.
  4. The finish on the motor casing and hardware is usually a weather resistant powder coat, stainless steel, or has some additional protective coating that can handle exposure to the elements.
  5. The blades are likely made of ABS plastic rather than plywood. ABS is a very strong durable material that resists warping and discoloration from moisture or UV exposure.
  6. Light fixtures are sealed on top and designed for outdoors
  7. The mounting hardware is either water tight or designed to prevent water from entering from above.

There are 2 types of outdoor ceiling fans, those rated for DAMP locations and those rated for WET locations. There is a notable difference between the two and it is important that you choose the right type for your application. In either case, make sure the fan you purchase is UL Listed for the application you need so that you know it can be safely installed without creating a potential electrical hazard.

Here are the differences between the two types of outdoor fans:

Damp rated outdoor fans are designed to handle moisture but not direct contact with rain or running water. Therefore, a damp rated outdoor ceiling fan can be installed in a covered area such as a patio or screened in porch or other areas that are protected from rain or dripping water.

Wet rated outdoor fans are designed to handle direct exposure to rain. They can be installed in virtually any indoor or outdoor location, covered or uncovered. So you can install a wet rated outdoor ceiling fan in an open gazebo, lattice covered lanai or other similar shade structure as well as under a covered porch or patio. Because wet rated outdoor fans are pretty much water tight, you can actually clean them by hosing them off…which is a great reason to buy a wet rated fan even if all you need is a damp rated model.

Commonly asked questions about outdoor fans:

Can an outdoor ceiling fan be installed indoors?

Yes, you can install an outdoor fan in your living room or any other room in your home where you want a fan. Many people will do this simply because they like the look of a particular outdoor fan. Also, outdoor fans are highly recommended for laundry rooms and bathrooms or any other room inside your home that that tends to have excessive moisture. In more humid climates, outdoor fans are a great choice for every room in the home.

I live in a very windy area and have had problems with blades breaking off…are there any outdoor fans that are made to handle high winds?

High winds can in fact sheer the blades off a ceiling fan, particularly cheaper models that use lightweight materials. Usually it is the metal blade holders that attach the blades to the fan that break rather than the blades themselves. So if you are in an area prone to high winds, outdoor fans that do not have blade holders are your best choice. If the fan is to be installed in an area that is 9 feet high or less, a hugger style outdoor fan is even better. A perfect example of such a fan is the Minka Aire Concept II Wet, which is one of the very few outdoor fans that meet this criteria.

Are there any outdoor fans that are designed to be taken down easily or that have blades that are easy to take off when a storm is coming?

This is a very common question. Unfortunately the answer is no. There are no ceiling fans designed with a “Quick Disconnect” mechanism or with blades that snap on and off. However, I suppose that if any fan manufacturer came up with such a fan it would be a big seller.

Running wires and installing a junction box can be difficult in many outdoor applications. Are there any outdoor ceiling fans that are battery operated?

Although DC powered ceiling fans are now in fact available, they are not yet powerful enough to handle the needs of outdoor applications, nor are they being designed to work from batteries. Currently, most DC powered ceiling fans use an AC/DC converter, so they still require electrical wiring. However, I would look for this to change in the near future…most likely in the next year or two.

Can a remote control be added to an outdoor ceiling fan?

Most add-on remotes or wall controls are not rated for use outdoors, so unless the control is specifically designed for the fan you are considering and is rated for the correct application (Damp or Wet), then you should not use it. If a remote control or wall control is important to you, look for outdoor fans that have such a control included with the fan.

Can any light fixture be added to an outdoor ceiling fan?

No. Just as ceiling fans are rated for Damp or Wet locations, so are the light fixtures that are used with them. Make sure you purchase a light fixture that is made by the manufacturer of the fan and that has the same rating. If you want an outdoor fan with a light fixture, your best bet is to purchase one comes with one, this way you can be certain they are compatible.

Ludovico Einaudi and How to Play Piano Like Him

Have you ever watched an artist demonstrate how they create a painting? If not, you’re missing something wonderful … how to go from nothing to something. How to create beauty where before there was only blank canvas.

Let’s take a landscape artist as an example and assume the subject has already been chosen – a peaceful woodland scene.

Now, how does the artist go about capturing this idea? Easy! They have a working method already in place! In art, the background is usually composed first. Foreground details are added in later.

We can apply this same concept to music composition as well; specifically New Age piano composition and how Ludovico Einaudi goes about it.

You see, we can also lay in the background and set the mood for the entire piece of music. And the best part about this is it’s quite easy to do.

For example, in the lesson “Watercolors” you learn how to use chords to color in the background. We use chords, time, and 2, 4, or 8-bar phrases to accomplish this. Once we have our harmonic background, we can add in more colors with a right hand improvisation.

This is the technique Ludovico Einaudi uses in much of his piano work. A left hand pattern lays in the “wash” so to speak, while the right hand creates a lovely melodic foreground.

Why this isn’t taught by most piano teachers is a mystery to me. Especially since the use of this technique gives immediate satisfaction.

Entire pieces of music have been and are created using this technique. All we need to know are the chords and when the chord changes occur. This is done by placing the chord symbols on something called a chart.

The chart is simply bars of music drawn out that indicate when you change chords. The cool thing about creating harmonic backgrounds is you don’t have to chart out more than 8-bars to create your musical canvas. Even 2-bars is enough. Why? Because once you have the chord progression down, you simply keep playing it over and over.

Eventually, this will get monotonous. But if we wanted to, we can add in a new harmonic background and keep the piece of music fresh!

Internet Marketing – Advantages and Disadvantages

Everyone seems to be jumping on the internet marketing bandwagon lately. In the race to get their business online, many successful businesses forget to ask themselves some tough questions about what they are doing, what their expectations are and what their plan is to meet those expectations.

The internet can be a powerful tool that can put you on solid footing with bigger companies. On the other hand, the other companies may have more money to pay for advertising. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you analyze your internet marketing strategy.

Advantage of Internet Marketing

– your store is open, 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Further, your customers are worldwide in reach, and can shop anytime that they want to

– the cost of spreading your message is next to nothing. Emailing your subscription base is more oftne cheaper than sending a letter through the mail

– updating your subscribers can be done almost instantly through email. Visitors to your website can get up to the minute information on each visit. If you are having a sale, your customers can start shopping at the discounted prices literally as soon as they open their email

– if you have an information sensitive business, such as a law firm, newspaper or online magazine, you can deliver your products directly to your customers without having to use a courier

Disadvantages of Internet Marketing

– online marketing is not free. The cost of software, hardware, wed site design, maintenance of your site, online distribution costs and of course, time, all must be factored into the cost of providing your service or product.

– slightly over 50% of households shop online. While that number will continue to grow, you are reaching less than two out of three households.

– the internet is still regarded as a source of information gathering for the majority of your customers. Of the number of visitors to your site, the vast majority of visitors who are motivated to buy will do so in person. Many people prefer the live interaction when they buy. If you have a small business with one location, this may deter customers from buying.

– easier to have outdated information on your site, thus timing of updates is critical

– there is no replacement for good old fashioned customer service. The majority of internet marketers lack customer service and inquiry response programs. As a result, many online visitors to your site will already have painted your site as poor service before they have even contacted you. The majority of websites also have poor navigation, which makes it difficult for your visitor to find what they are looking for. Many sites were created with a marketing view, not a customer service point of view.

– is your site secure? Does your customer know this? There are many incorrect stereotypes about the security of the internet out there. As a result, many of your visitors will not want to use their credit card to make a purchase. The fear of having their credit card info stolen is a clear and present danger in the minds of your visitors

– there is a lot of competition for your product already out there. By the time your visitor finds you, they have already been clicking many links. Unless they can find what they are looking for quickly, they are gone.

– many web visitors expect something for free. What do you have to offer them?

There are many other pros and cons of internet marketing. Its important for you to consider each when creating your internet marketing strategy. Each of the disadvantages can be overcome, but only if you view the customer experience from the eyes of your customer, not as an internet marketer.

Sinus Infection Symptoms – How to Identify and Classify Them

Acute Sinus Infection Symptoms (Sudden Onset)

Sinus infection Symptoms vary somewhat, depending on the type of sinus and whether the infections are acute or chronic.

The most common type of sinus develops in the largest sinus cavities in the skull, and those are situated in the cheekbones. Typical symptoms are as follows:

Maxillary Sinusitis (in the cheekbones)

  • Red or swollen cheeks that feel tender when touched.
  • Painful upper jaw and aching teeth.
  • Pressure headache focused across one or both cheeks and below the eyes.
  • Prolific nasal discharge with occasional plugs of thick yellow or green mucous.
  • Post-nasal drip (down the back of the throat), sometimes accompanied by a sore throat.
  • Bad breath.
  • Low-grade fever is fairly common.
  • Pain and pressure is worse when upright or bending forward and better when lying down.

Frontal Sinusitis (in the forehead)

  • Severe pressure sinus headache in the brow area on one or both sides.
  • Thick yellow or green tinged nasal discharge.
  • Post-nasal drip, occasional sore throat.
  • Bad breath.
  • Pain eases when upright and intensifies when lying down.
  • Low-grade fever is common.

Sphenoid Sinusitis (behind the eyes)

  • A cap of dull, deep pain that seems to encircle the head, starting at the back and continuing round to just behind the eyes. Pain in the top of the skull.
  • Double vision, tunnel vision, bright flashes, eyesight goes in and out of focus and other disturbances may be experienced. These indicate that sinus pressure extends to the membranes lining the brain (a rare and dangerous condition).
  • Thick nasal discharge with plugs of yellow or green mucous.
  • Post-nasal drip, occasional sore throat.
  • Bad breath.
  • Pain intensifies when lying on the back or bending forward.
  • Low-grade fever is common.

Ethmoid Sinusitis (between the eyes, just above the bridge of the nose)

  • Pressurized pain in the corners of the eyes close to the tear ducts, or down one or both sides of the nose.
  • Pressure headache in one or both temples.
  • Sinus congestion with occasional prolific nasal discharge containing yellow or green plugs of mucous.
  • Post-nasal drip, sore throat.
  • Bad breath.
  • Pressurized pain intensifies when coughing, sneezing or lying on the back, and eases when standing or sitting with the head upright.
  • Loss of smell can occur.
  • Low-grade fever is common.

Please Note: Acute sinusitis is considered to be an infectious disease.

Do not Underestimate the Dangers of Sinusitis

On rare occasions infection could spread to the meninges surrounding the brain and sometimes right into the facial bones themselves. The infection can also cause an abscess to develop in the eye socket, facial bone or brain.

Sinus infection symptoms related to the eye socket can start with swollen or droopy eyelids, fixed dilated pupils, inability to move the eyes and vision problems. These complications are associated with ethmoid sinusitis.

A person experiencing any of the above would become totally incapacitated and dangerously ill.

Immediate hospitalization and specialized care would be essential; these conditions could lead to permanent blindness, coma and even death.

Chronic Sinusitis Symptoms (Long-lasting and Recurrent)

The cause of repetitive sinus attacks is largely unknown. However, careful observation has shown that the condition often occurs in people suffering from asthma.

If this turns out to be a major cause of chronic episodes, then one must assume that the reason for many attacks could logically be traced back to either allergic reaction or to fungicidal causes. This argument is supported by the fact that most asthma sufferers have allergies.

Maxillary Sinusitis

  • Dull pressurized pain below the eye.
  • Pain increases with allergic reactions, colds or ‘flu.
  • Dull, aching toothache in the upper jaw, (known as “sinus toothache”).
  • Discomfort builds up during the day and culminates in nighttime coughing.

Frontal Sinusitis

  • Persistent low-grade sinus pressure headache in the brow area.
This is a sign of abnormal anatomic variations inside the nose, such as a deviated septum that restricts the nasal passages.

Ethmoid Sinusitis

  • Congestion.
  • Chronic nasal discharge.
  • Persistent background pain across the bridge of the nose.
  • Pain on bridge of nose intensifies when wearing eyeglasses.
  • Post-nasal drip.
  • Chronic sore throat.
  • Bad breath.
  • Pain worse in the late morning.

Sphenoid Sinusitis

Continuous low-grade headache in most patients.

Unlike the acute variety, chronic sinusitis is not considered to be infectious.
